Comprehensive Guide to SSC MTS and Havaldar Exam Syllabus

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) and Havaldar examinations. These exams are divided into two papers – Paper-I and Paper-II, each with a distinct syllabus. Paper-I Syllabus

Paper-I is a computer-based objective type test, divided into four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, General English, and General Awareness.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

This section tests the candidates’ ability to analyze, interpret, and solve problems of verbal and non-verbal type. Topics covered include similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, abstract ideas and symbols and their relationship, arithmetical computation, and other analytical functions.

Numerical Aptitude

The Numerical Aptitude section assesses the candidates’ ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and calculations. Topics covered include number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and relationship between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, use of tables and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time, and time and work.

General English

The General English section tests the candidates’ understanding of the English language and its correct usage. Topics covered include vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, writing ability, and its correct usage.

General Awareness

The General Awareness section tests the candidates’ general awareness of the environment around them and its application to society. Topics covered include current events, sports, history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity including Indian Constitution, and scientific research.

Paper-II Syllabus

Paper-II is a descriptive type test, which includes one question of writing a short essay or letter in English or any language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This paper tests the candidates’ basic language skills commensurate with the educational qualification prescribed for the post. The paper is set in Hindi, English, and other languages mentioned in the Schedule VIII of the Constitution and carries 50 marks.

Physical Efficiency Test/ Physical Standard Test (PET/PST)

The duration of PET/PST for SSC MTS and Havaldar posts is not fixed, but it depends on the performance of the candidates in the physical tasks. The PET/PST consists of two activities: walking and cycling (only for Havaldar posts).

Walking

Male candidates have to walk 1600 meters in 15 minutes and female candidates have to walk 1 km in 20 minutes.

Cycling

Male candidates have to cycle 8 km in 30 minutes and female candidates have to cycle 3 km in 25 minutes.

Candidates who complete these activities successfully will qualify for the PET/PST. Those who fail to do so will be disqualified. The PET/PST is only conducted for the Havaldar posts, not for the MTS posts.
